How Vision Is Linked to Learning

Your child’s eyes work hard to help them learn and play. In fact, around 80% of learning is presented visually. Various visual skills must work together in order to see clearly and comprehend the visual information being presented.

When your child’s eyes aren’t working to the best of their ability, it can affect their success in the classroom. Vision problems can be classified into 3 categories:

  • Refractive Errors—can cause blurred vision at different distances. This includes myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism.
  • Functional Vision Problems—refers to how the brain and eyes work together. Important functional vision skills include eye teaming (binocular vision) and fine eye movements important for reading.
  • Visual Perceptual Issues—relates to how eyes identify an object or word, determine its importance, and relate to previously stored information in the brain.

Visiting your optometrist can help detect and treat learning-related vision problems. Our goal is to have your child see life clearly, so they can learn and discover our beautiful world.

Time for the first eye exam for your children?

As your child grows and develops, so do their eyes. Regular visits to the eye doctor can help monitor if your child’s eyes are developing on track.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists suggests when your child should visit the eye doctor at certain points depending on their age and development. Your optometrist may recommend more frequent visits depending on your child’s unique eyes and their risk of developing an eye condition.

Infants & Toddlers

Your child should come in for their first eye exam between 6–9 months old. From birth to 2 years old, your child’s eyes will begin to work together, colour vision will stabilize, and eye-hand coordination skills will develop.

A comprehensive eye examination can detect common conditions such as strabismus (crossed eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye). Early detection can allow for early treatment and correction.

Between ages 2–5, children should undergo at least one eye exam. It’s important for preschool-age children to achieve important visual milestones such as developing good eye-hand coordination and depth perception.

Activities such as building blocks, painting, and organizing the shapes and colours of objects help improve their visual skills, preparing them for learning and reading.

School-age children between 6–19 should have an eye exam annually. Symptoms of vision-related issues may arise due to the increased visual demands in the classroom, including:

  • Frequent headaches
  • Rubbing eyes
  • Tilting head when viewing objects up close or in the distance
  • Avoiding close up or distant work
  • Losing place while reading
  • Trouble with reading comprehension

If you notice your child presenting signs of vision-related problems, book an appointment for a thorough assessment. We can help determine why your child may be struggling visually.
