Types of Eye Disease

Eye diseases can come in various forms, and our dedicated approach to diagnosing and treating them puts our patients first. Learning about types of eye disease helps to inform your treatment options.

Cataracts

A cataract occurs when the normally clear lens of your eye becomes clouded. For people with cataracts, your vision becomes cloudy and obscured in the affected eye. Cataracts can make it difficult to read, drive a vehicle, or notice the details of daily life.

Signs and symptoms of cataracts can include:

Clouded, blurred, or dim vision
Increased difficulty with vision at night
Sensitivity to light and glare
Fading or yellowing colours

Cataracts can develop slowly, and at first, you may not notice significant vision loss. It’s essential to keep up with regular eye exams to help catch the disease early and begin your treatment. Cataract treatment involves changing your lifestyle and monitoring things such as smoking and alcohol consumption. A healthy diet can also contribute to prevention.

When cataracts begin to affect your daily life and prevent you from going about your daily activities, such as reading or driving—surgery is the only option to remove them.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that target and damage your optic nerve. Your optic nerve carries the information your retina receives to your brain, providing you with vision.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60—it can occur at any age but is more common in older adults.

Signs and symptoms of glaucoma can include:

Patchy blind spots in your peripheral or central vision
Tunnel vision (in advanced stages)
Severe headaches
Blurred vision
Eye redness

While there is no cure for glaucoma, at Flamborough Family Eyecare, we utilize diagnostic technology to test for glaucoma and prepare a treatment plan for you.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an age-related condition that can blur your central vision when aging causes damage to the macula. Untreated macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over the age of 55.

There are 2 types of macular degeneration:

Dry AMD is the more common form and occurs in early, intermediate, and late stages. It usually progresses over several years. While there is no cure, prevention methods like giving up smoking and a healthy diet can help slow the disease.

Wet AMD is less common and usually results in faster vision loss. Wet AMD is always late-stage and happens when abnormal blood vessels grow in the back of your eye and damage the macula.
