5 Signs Your Glasses Prescription May Be Outdated

Your glasses are part of nearly everything you do—from driving around Waterdown and working at a computer to reading, studying, and enjoying time with family. Because vision often changes gradually, however, it is easy to adapt without realizing that your current prescription is no longer providing the clearest or most comfortable sight.

An outdated prescription is not the only possible cause of visual discomfort, but persistent changes deserve attention. Here are five signs that it may be time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your Waterdown optometrist.

1. Headaches Are Becoming More Frequent

Headaches around the forehead, temples, or behind the eyes may occur when your visual system is working harder to maintain focus. You might notice them after reading, working on a computer, driving, or completing other visually demanding activities.

Headaches can have many causes, so they should not automatically be blamed on your glasses. Still, if they are happening more often and your prescription has not been checked recently, an eye exam is a sensible next step.

2. You Are Squinting to See Clearly

Squinting can temporarily make an object appear sharper by narrowing the amount of unfocused light entering your eyes. If you regularly squint to read road signs, recognize faces, watch television, or view your screen—even while wearing your glasses—your prescription may need an adjustment.

Children may not always report that their vision is blurry. Parents should also watch for frequent squinting, sitting unusually close to screens, or holding books and other objects close to the face.

3. Your Eyes Feel Tired, Achy, or Strained

Long periods of screen use, reading, or close-up work can leave anyone’s eyes feeling tired. When glasses no longer provide the right correction, these everyday tasks may become even less comfortable.

Signs of eye strain can include tired or heavy eyes, trouble changing focus, dryness, watering, burning, or discomfort late in the day. Updated lenses may help when a prescription change is contributing, but your optometrist can also check for dry eye, focusing concerns, or other possible causes.

4. Your Vision Is Blurry or Occasionally Doubled

Blurred vision at a distance, up close, or both is one of the clearest reasons to have your prescription assessed. You may notice that fine print is harder to read, nighttime driving feels less comfortable, or familiar details no longer appear as sharp.

Double vision should not be ignored. If blurred or double vision appears suddenly—especially alongside eye pain, weakness, dizziness, numbness, or difficulty speaking—seek urgent medical attention rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

5. Your Lenses or Frames Are Worn or Damaged

Sometimes your prescription is still suitable, but the condition of your eyewear is affecting how well you see. Scratched lenses, damaged coatings, loose hinges, or a bent frame can create glare, distortion, and an uneven fit.

Our eyewear team can inspect your glasses, adjust the fit, and help determine whether a repair, replacement lenses, or a new frame would be the best solution for your comfort, appearance, and lifestyle.

A Clearer View Starts With a Complete Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam does more than determine whether your glasses prescription has changed. It also evaluates how your eyes focus and work together while checking for signs of eye health concerns that may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages.

The right eye exam schedule depends on your age, health, family history, prescription, and your optometrist’s recommendations. If your vision feels different, your glasses are uncomfortable, or it has been a while since your last visit, you do not need to wait for your next planned checkup.
